Some items to be framed are of lessor importance than others. This helps our frame designers to select materials that appropriate for the importance of the item. For lesser important items to be framed, glass or acrylic may not need to be UV or non-reflective and mats don't have to be rag cotton. For more important and more valuable items that you want to preserve through many generations, it makes sense to use glass or acrylic that is UV and non-reflective and do use mats that are 100% acid-free rag cotton so as to avoid the possibility of items being compromised over many years.

Although the rule of thumb is to design for the item to be framed, it frequently can be helpful to consider the larger context of where the item is likely to be displayed. Sometimes it is desired to match the mat, glass, or moulding of other items expected to be displayed nearby. Other times the overall style of the framing needs to complement other framed items nearby. The expected width or height available for the framed item can influence the overall size of the framed piece.

Sometimes it is critical for a framing solution to match as closely as possible the items framed years ago.
