ART DEFINITIONS

Acrylic: Lightweight alternative to glass as a glazing to protect artwork.

Gallery Wrap: Art on canvas that has been stretched on stretcher bar moulding with the border of the art showing on the edges.
Giclee: From french word that means "spray". Art reproduction on canvas made from high resolution digital image.
Limited Edition: Art print that is signed and numbered. The number includes the specific print number along with the maximum number of prints available in the release.
Lithograph: A 4-color process of applying ink to the surface of a stone tablet with the artwork and then pressing it onto paper. Generally lithographs are published as limited editions.
Museum Wrap: Art on canvas that has been stretched on stretcher bar moulding with the art showing only on the front with the edges left showing the raw canvas or sometimes painted.
Open Edition: Art print that is not signed or numbered. The print does not have a maximum number of prints that will be available.
Oil: A painting made with oil-based paints.
Pastel: A painting made with powdered pigments that are blended together on paper.
Publisher: The person or business responsible for releasing an open or limited edition of a work of art.
Secondary Market: Individuals or galleries who purchase and resell art purchased from the publisher.
Serigraph: A print made from a 4-color silk screen process.
Stretched Canvas: Art on canvas that has been stretched over wood moulding and held in place by a series of staples on the sides or back. With a gallery wrap or museum wrap, the staples are at the back so they aren't visible from the sides.
Woodblock Print: A 4-color print made from woodblocks, each cut to represent the image for a single color. The final artwork is achieved by applying ink to the surface of each woodblock and then pressing it onto paper.
