Everyone desires to capture special moments in time. I have been doing this in my primitive memory paintings since 1988. A native Texan, I am from a long line of story tellers and love celebrating the life stories of others through my acrylic on canvas work. After being introduced to pastels in 2020, I fell in love with the depth of color, texture, and freedom of the medium which is now the primary focus of my work. Stories of light, movement and pattern are now being told through my use of mark making, color, and watercolor underpainting. My family time at the Texas coast influences many of my paintings. A story of a fish pulled from the ocean and the sparkling colors and textures that appear in the scales, or the unexpected change of colors in a palm frond as it is caught in the gusty Texas breeze are the new tales I try to express on this rough paper surface. One of my favorite sayings is, “Life is about the messy bits.” Well, that’s what pastel painting is to me; learning and creating with the messy bits in my box of beautiful colors.
