Bern Abplanalp was born in State College, Pennsylvania in 1969, but he got to Texas as quickly as possible. Bern grew up in Galveston, Texas and has lived in Austin since the early 1990s. Bern’s first art class was at Austin’s Laguna Gloria and as soon as the first brush stroke hit the canvass he was hooked!
Bern’s frenetic, often stressful professional career in high tech had always benefitted from the calming effects of a life balanced with art. In the process of making art, Bern discovered an element of calming, untapped creativity. From that original class at Laguna Gloria, Bern spent years leveraging his spare time and stolen hours here and there in his home studio painting and drawing. Bern is largely self-taught, leveraging the occasional workshop, numerous YouTube videos, and the ever present encouragement from his wife into a fast evolving love of art.
Bern and his wife love to travel the world, spoil their dogs, and are dedicated animal welfare advocates and volunteers. All of these elements find their way into Bern’s wide range of artistic subjects - still life, en plein air landscapes, and “dogscapes”.
Bern has participated in numerous group shows at local events and galleries, as well as a few juried shows. Most recently, Bern’s art has been featured at a local show, “Falling Into Winter”, at Art for the People Gallery in Austin, and “Small Works 2022: A National Juried Exhibition”, at Main Street Arts in Clifton Springs, New York.
